When Do You Need a Motor Grader?
Also known as a road grader or a maintainer, motor graders are needed to flatten a surface before asphalt, concrete or landscaping decorations can be applied. Aside from road maintenance, a motor grader can also spread dirt, gravel and other aggregate, as well as clear brush, debris, mix windrows and remove snow.
Different Types of Motor Graders
- Rigid Motor Grader – This motor grader design was popular until sometime in the 90s. They typically have one axle and a less powerful blade.
- Articulated Motor Grader – This design has better maneuverability as well as an axle in the rear and front (with an articulation point in between them). Steering in small spaces is much easier than rigid frame motor graders.
- Small Motor Graders – For most jobs, a small motor grader that has between 80 and 150 horsepower will be enough.
- Large Motor Graders – Anything above 150 horsepower is good for state roads, highways and other large jobs.
- Spreader Grader – These motor graders are specifically meant for spreading landscaping materials.
