When Do You Need Mini Excavators?
Weighing less than 10 tons, a mini excavator is often necessary for digging, lifting heavy loads and transporting materials and debris in residential construction, agriculture, landscaping and across many other industries where larger pieces of heavy equipment are not necessary. With heavy equipment attachments, mini excavators can also demolish, grade, remove snow and do even more. They are used wherever precision digging and extra maneuverability are needed.
Types of Mini Excavators
Mini excavators are small enough to operate in compact job sites, but still large enough to not be underpowered. In fact, it is not uncommon for mini excavators to outpower other larger machines in terms of sheer digging power. Mini excavators are also quite popular for landscaping jobs where a lighter footprint is required.
- Tail Swing Mini Excavators – These mini excavators are better-suited for open spaces. The “tail” (back portion) extends past the tracks or wheels at least 6 inches, which means it can collide with objects as the chassis rotates (and is therefore not meant for cramped sites). Tail swing models can lift the most and dig the deepest.
- Zero Tail Swing Mini Excavators – These mini excavators do not have any part of the chassis overlapping the tracks or wheels, which means they will not touch any walls when they turn. These types of mini excavators are meant for working in small quarters.
