The groundbreaking (and fixing) JCB Pothole Pro is an all-in-one excavator attachment system in combination with a JCB excavator that promises to repair potholes in under eight minutes—a rate four times faster and at half the cost of existing methods.
A Smart Solution to a Persistent Problem
JCB Chairman Lord Anthony Bamford spearheaded the development of the Pothole Pro. His mission was clear: to tackle the issue of pesky potholes efficiently.
"Potholes are a scourge...we are fixated on finding a solution," Bamford stated. His ambition was to devise a method that not only fixes potholes permanently without breaking the budget.
The Pothole Pro at Work: Maximized Efficiency
The Pothole Pro's capabilities are downright impressive. The JCB excavator boasts a travel speed of 40 km/h (25 mph) and can repair up to 700 potholes per month. It features a 60-cm (23.6 inches) wide planer with 1.3 meters (4.3 feet) of side-shift adjustment, allowing operators to cover an entire lane from the curb without repositioning. The machine’s TAB two-piece boom, equipped with a JCB Multi-tool and an X12 Steelwrist tilt-rotator enhances its versatility.
Innovation in Action: Tools and Techniques
JCB's multifunctional approach includes a 40-cm (15.7 inches) cropping tool for a clean cut, eliminating the need for separate tools. The machine also integrates a 120-cm (47.2 inches) wide sweeper/bucket with dust suppression for efficient cleaning and material removal.
This design allows the Pothole Pro to prepare up to nearly 300 square yards (250 square meters) of roadway per shift—or 6,540 cubic yards (5,000 cubic meters) per month.
Proven on the Ground: Real-World Success Stories
JCB has rigorously tested the Pothole Pro—confirming its 8-minute repair claim. In Staffordshire, UK, the machine executed 51 road repairs in 20 days—a task typically taking a six-person crew 63 days.
In Pennsylvania, USA, it impressed local authorities with its speed and maneuverability.
